“There are days we live as if death were nowhere in the background...”
Covid-19 : Droplet Mismanagement
39” W x 52” H * Hand -Dyed Cottons * 2020
Way back in the early days of the pandemic, the phrase “droplet management” was being used. Why do talking heads latch on to catchy phrases, as if this were a line on their resume?

AfterParty3: Pre-Pandemic Boogie
70”H x 67.75”W * Hand-Dyed Cottons * 2020
A tribute to the good old days only a few short months ago--when we were dancing joyously together, with no concern for "social distancing." Wildly spreading love, not illness.
It is a quilt belonging to my AfterParty series, because everyone knows the real fun starts when the party is officially over. I dyed fabrics in bright colors, then cut them into wild dancing shapes. The quilting is energetic and sinuous, and although each color belongs to its shape, the thread vibrates and wiggles out of bounds.
The world is eagerly anticipating a post-pandemic boogie. That'll be a huge celebration!
SPRING 2020 : Joy Shadowed
40.25”H x 63”W * Hand-Dyed & Commercial Cottons * 2020
This is overall feeling of life right now, in the midst of a global pandemic. We still experience moments of happiness, but the fear--not only of death, but even more so of grief and loss--lurks, shadowing and belittling everything. It is a bully, as much as the coronavirus itself (and here, in the USA, the President and his cronies.)
The grey shapes in this work are seen in other quilts I've made. They are ghosts, here malevolent and menacing. In other other pieces, they are more benevolent, just memories. I stitched this quilt with drab, relentlessly straight lines for the background, and brighter threads radiating wildly from the small blocks of joy.
